The Company Mid-Continental Research Associates, Inc. (MCRA) is a corporation owned and operated by the husband-wife team of Robert H. Lafferty III and Kathleen M. Hess. This woman-owned small business was formed in July 1983 to conduct cultural resources studies. Since its founding, MCRA has completed several hundred cultural resources studies in a timely manner. These projects range from simple one-day investigations to large and complex multi-year efforts. MCRA successfully carried out the largest archeological site testing project in the southeastern United States, while continuing to provide other clients with excellent service on small projects. The studies include archeological site location survey,
National Register of Historic Places site significance testing,
and mitigation of impact to archaeological sites through data recovery.
We have developed cultural resource management plans, memoranda
of agreement, and cultural resources treatment plans for our clients.
MCRA has worked closely with architectural historians, architects,
and the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program to interpret and
preserve information on historic properties. We have documented
numerous historic structures in a variety of environments. We have consulted with several tribal nations. At MCRA, we are sensitive to the beliefs and concerns of tribal nations for their ancestors. The prehistoric record is a part of all of our heritages, through the American Indian. When we are dealing with sacred sites and burials, these will always be treated with dignity and respect. The study of prehistoric earthquakes in the central United State is a primary research focus of MCRA. In partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey and M. Tuttle & Associates, MCRA has investigated sand blows at more than twenty archeological sites. This work has documented and temporally constrained four prehistoric earthquakes and produced more than 100 radiocarbon dates associated with archeological deposits. home / about
